Thanks man, that is good writeup. I went for the .10 version. Any idea why my java version shows up as 1.5.0_16?

setting of environment variables should go to ~/.mavenrc

if you put it into bash’s initialization file then settings are not visible from within your IDE for example (well, if you do not start IDE from bash – who does ?).
